Financial group Woolwich says it is taking advantage of WAP technology to become the first bank in the UK to target its customers via mobile internet services.

The bank has teamed up with Vodafone to offer the service on Nokia's wireless application protocol (Wap) mobile phone.

From April, Woolwich Open Plan banking account holders will be able to view balances and transactions, pay bills and transfer money through a secure internet link using Wap technology.

Danny Williams, research analyst at Analysys, said: "Most corporate mobile users will wait for the higher bandwidth GPRS services, but it is important to get Wap services up and running in preparation for this. There could be a lot of opportunities for companies that Wap-enable their web sites."

"This is real anytime, anywhere, anyhow banking," said John Stewart, Woolwich chief executive.

Other UK banks are expected to follow suit in the coming weeks.
