Voting online could become the norm for Newham shoppers, following the Borough Council initative to roll out a multimedia access project with local retailer Asda.
The ATM-based kiosks will deliver local information to Asda's Beckenham store. The council said facilities for voting online could be re- leased within 18 months.
Head of contract services Richard Steel said the move would increase voting in local elections. 'Asda is seen as the heart of the community. There's an opportunity for people to shop and vote at the same time.'
News of the plan came as the minister for local government, Hilary Armstrong, launched a series of seminars designed to 'revive local democracy'. She planned to suggest alternative locations for polling stations, and enable voting on a Sunday.
A Department for the Environment spokesman said: 'I wouldn't be surprised if online voting came up.'
Supermarket Somerfield welcomed the idea. System and supply director Chris Mason said: 'Outlets like ourselves make more sense because we are based in the neighbourhood rather then out of town.'
