Handset giant Nokia Corporation has bought media-sharing web site Twango for an undisclosed sum as part of its strategy to bring file sharing to mobile phones.
The site, which went live in October last year, providers subscribers with a monthly bandwidth of up to 250 megabytes that can be used to upload photos, videos and other personal media. Non-paying users can browse the content for free.
Twango was set up by former Microsoft managers, and is based in Redmond, Washington. It supports a greater variety of file types than many of its rivals, but has so far failed to secure a high-profile presence on the web.
'The Twango acquisition is a concrete step towards our internet services vision of providing seamless access to information, entertainment, and social networks - at anytime, anywhere, from any connected device, in any way that you choose,' said Nokia multimedia general manager Anssi Vanjoki.
