The growing popularity of mobile devices has doubled email traffic at insurance provider Lloyd’s over the past year, according to the firm’s chief information officer (CIO).
Peter Hambling told Computing that the rise of handheld computers has had a major effect on the business during his first 12 months as CIO.
“We’re seeing exponential growth at the moment,” said Hambling.
“There are now three times as many BlackBerrys in circulation as there were a year ago, and that’s had a big impact on email, because if you have both a mobile device and a desktop, your messages go to two different places.
“I would also speculate that people are conducting more of their business over mobile.”
Demand for processor use, networking and data storage is also rising, said Hambling. And managing these demands will play a large role in his strategy.
