New software from wireless applications provider mBlox could benefit firms developing services based on SMS messaging.

The firm will use Empower Interactive's Virtual Mobile Redirector (VMR) platform to enable high-volume services across all the mobile operators' SMS networks.

MBlox's SMS Mobile Originator services allow firms to receive many more SMS messages than is now possible, and uses phone numbers that use company names rather than generic short codes.

"Firms have been waiting for this capability," said mBlox chief executive Andrew Bud.

At the moment, firms accepting SMS messages do so either using a mobile phone or by connecting to the short message centre of one of the mobile operators. Bud said this had stopped many organisations from making the most of SMS services.
