The public and private agencies involved in the UK Census claim to have taken all precautions to guarantee that the data will be secure.
Census project service director Tom Rowe said that information held at the processing centre is stored on a closed network of servers with no connection to the outside world.
The data is being transported by road from the processing centre to the head office of the Office for National Statistics (ONS).
"Security was a consideration, but it would take a long time to shunt the volumes of information involved down a leased line," said Simon King, head of census processing for the ONS.
He explained that the ONS security procedures were independently audited by US consultant Hedra and achieved a rating well above the required level.
"It's an offence to disclose any information. There is a declaration that those involved in handling Census data must sign," he said.
