Nexsan SASBoy touts green credentials

Storage vendor Nexsan Technologies today announced SASBoy, an OS-independent storage system with both iSCSI and Fibre Channel (FC connectivity), aimed at small to medium enterprises.

Nexsan is touting SASBoy as the world's first 'green' serial-attached SCSI (SAS) storage system using massive array of idle disks (MAID) 2.0 technology.

Nexsan's senior marketing vice president Bob Woolery said, "This is an extension of the SATABoy product, but has 14 x 300GB 15,000rpm SAS drives giving 4.2TB of storage in a 3U form factor."

"We're offering this to our customers to address their needs with respect to high performance fixed content or content stored long term. Customers need a fast response time when searching or retrieving fixed content files, like for instance X-ray images or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) files," added Woolery.

Another differentiator say Nexsan is, that its SAS drives, come with AutoMAID, its intelligent power management system, which allows multiple levels of energy efficiency through user configurability. Woolery pointed out that, " Since this storage is aimed at tier two and thus is not active on a 24 x 7 basis, this gives an opportunity to save energy when drives are not being accessed."

Nexsan's centralised management and monitoring platform, NexScan allows remote management and configuration of multiple arrays from a single GUI.

SASBoy is available now from Nexsan global VARs, and Nexsan estimates street pricing at around £3,575 + VAT per Terabyte.
