CBI says IT can help boost UK business

A new report from the CBI details how IT can be used to boost UK competitiveness and innovation.

The report, called UK Competitiveness: The Role of IT Services shows how British firms can better meet customer needs, enter new markets and add more value to their offerings, and was co-sponsored by Nominet, the domain name registry.

Findings highlighted in the report include the suggestion that investments in internet enabled services was giving firms a major competitive advantage. This manifested itself in improved customer satisfaction and retention and a number of new business opportunities.

There are a number of drivers for investment, ranging from increased demand for services from international customers, and the need to improve marketing and delivery methods.

However, many firms would like to receive more help from the government as they begin to tackle such innovation. The report found that 42 per cent of those that contributed to the survey would like support, while 39 per cent would appreciate the establishment of a national centre of excellence to identify and share best practice.

John Cridland, Deputy Director-General of the CBI, said: “This report shows that the main driver for developing IT services is now the ability to help companies focus on customers and add value, rather than simply cutting costs. At a time of tougher economic conditions and ever-increasing international competition, it is vital that all firms understand how they can use IT to drive performance and create goods and services customers want."
