Over the last 12 months, rocketing share prices have generated massive gains for networks and channel players.

In The Sunday Times' annual listing of the UK's 1,000 wealthiest individuals, Terry Matthews (Newbridge Networks) narrowly missed becoming the first recorded Welsh billionaire.

Matthews' #900m fortune is based on a 25% holding in Newbridge.

Peter Rigby, owner of SCH and the Byte superstore chain, remains king of the computer retailers, with an estimated #350m fortune. Technology newcomer Paul Sykes sits in third place, but most would argue that Sykes' ISP business Planet Online will deplete a #250m fortune.

David Hood, cofounder of satellite decoder company Pace, and Robert Madge, of Token Ring fame, tie for fourth place with fortunes of #200m.

Others include Wilf Corrigan (the #160m founder of LSI Logic), Alan Sugar (#186m) and Sir Peter Michael (Cray Electronics and Micro Consultants).
