The CSSA is to launch an IT manifesto spelling out what urgent action to be taken by an incoming government if the UK is to be competitive in the next millennium.

The 10-point manifesto, to be published on 25 February, was developed after research among UK firms, the education sector, and by studying political attitudes towards IT.

The CSSA, working with Oracle, claims it shows the widening gap between the UK and the rest of the world in the adoption and exploitation of IT.

Philip Crawford, managing director of Oracle UK, said: 'We intend to challenge the political parties to take IT seriously in the run up to the election.'

The Department for Education & Employment has allocated u1m to extend a scheme to give teachers portable PCs to improve their IT skills. The project, managed by the National Council for Educational Technology, will award contracts to vendors to supply 300 teachers with notebooks, Net access and CD-ROM software.
