Metronet Rail is using remote controlled robotic machines to speed construction work during the renewal of the London Underground to improve staff safety.
The three specialist demolition machines, a Brokk 90 and two Brokk 40s, are operated remotely by staff to chip away at concrete faster than a person could.
It not only increases the speed of work as Metronet removes 140 metres of tunnel lining from Wanstead station but also improves safety.
Staff do not have to stand under falling rocks as it can be operated from a significant distance from the work area.
Project director Ed Maloney said: ‘The introduction of the Brokk machines has transformed the way we can demolish concrete in these confined tunnels.
‘Not only have the machines sped up the demolition process but it has virtually eliminated any danger to our staff working on site.’
