3Com has set out a blueprint for installing 'policy powered networks' (PPNs) enabling network managers to implement policies across the enterprise.
When the tools are rolled out in Q3 this year, managers can use PPNs to set rules for user access and network priorities. The information is then stored in an LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) directory.
The devices would then query user requests against the information in LDAP, to identify who can gain access or demand extra bandwidth.
The five-step plan covers network hardware, software standards, directory support and network monitoring procedures, and focuses on four functions.
These include requests for resources; a policy server to store and manage the rules; information sources, including LDAP supporting directories; plus network devices. The guidelines support 3Com and third-party technology.
It encompasses leased telecoms lines for voice and traditional data networks.
