Share settlement system Crest scooped one of the British Computer Society's top three awards for excellence last week, writes Dan Sabbagh.

Crest went live, on time and to budget, in April this year and proved its worth two months later by successfully handling the Halifax flotation - the largest in the City's history.

CrestCo - and particularly its IT staff - are delighted, said spokesman Paul Symonds. 'An outstanding large commercial development has been recognised,' he said.

Sharing the award was an iris analysis application devised by staff at the University of Cambridge. It reduces the complexity of a person's iris to a single code which can be used for identification.

The third winner, from BT's Martlesham laboratories, is a system of intelligent agents which automatically negotiate routine business-to-business contracts.

Paul O'Brien, manager of the agent-based workflow project, says the agents are ready for commercial use. A trial is planned for next year.
