Bacs, the UK electronic clearing house, has urged customers to stop delivering transaction information on magnetic media and switch to online telecoms links.
The company has set up a promotion with BT which will waive the #60 connection fee if customers sign up with Bacs' Dialplus dial-up service. Bacs is targeting 5,000 of its 7,000 customers who submit information on magnetic media.
Kevin Hart, relationship manager at Bacs, said: 'Switching would save customers time in having to prepare tapes, package and courier them.'
Many of the targeted customers are small and medium-sized businesses which still rely on magnetic tape and disks. Bacs will no longer accept these media after 1998.
Customers will need to buy connection software, which could cost #200, and pay a subscription fee. No hardware changes are necessary, said Hart.
