Novell's chief executive had his credit card details stolen online and then, to make matters worse, the thief used his card to buy more than 100 boxes of arch-rival Microsoft's Windows NT.

Eric Schmidt made the embarrassing admission in a speech at San Francisco's Digital Economy conference last week.

Schmidt is uncertain how the thieves made off with his details, but believes that it was done using software that reads a user's personal information stored in cookies and sends it to a hacker.

"Cookies are one of the biggest disasters for computers in the past years ...

They are a great idea but they are just stored in the wrong place," said Schmidt.

He is currently campaigning to oust cookies with his company's new digitalme online identification service, which is based on Novell's Directory Service's technology.
