DHL Express is installing real time planning and scheduling software to improve the dispatch process and customer service within its European Express business.

The international delivery and logistics company says the software, which is due to be rolled out in summer, will streamline and standardise its dispatch process.

It will also reduce the workload of dispatchers and improve productivity, says DHL Express operations process and standards director Geert-Jan Dirven.

‘By implementing Quintiq software, we expect a significant reduction of our pick-up and delivery cost base,’ he said.

DHL Express Europe has a complex dispatch process for pick-up and delivery of 1.8 billion shipments annually, including processing dispatch workload, daily workload allocation, managing daily tours and allocating resources.

To improve its productivity, the company has decided to replace existing systems with a centralised dispatch system, which automates the allocation of bookings to reduce the number of missed pick-ups.

The use of a common dispatch system and standardising on one database will also cut IT-related costs.
