Cisco Systems will make its fourth acquisition this month, buying up internet appliance manufacturer SightPath in an all-stock deal worth $800m (£503m).

Cisco said SightPath's content delivery appliances will help customers deliver live streaming media, high-reliability hosting and other capabilities.

Cisco has been strengthening its support for voice and video networking, setting its sights on challenging rivals Lucent Technologies and Nortel Networks.

SightPath's products, which include SightPath Appliance and SightPath Studio, continually collect data on web traffic, congestion and server loads to determine the best path to route users' requests.

The acquisition is the latest in Cisco's ongoing buying spree. The company recently said it will acquire Atlantech to round out its network management line. Earlier this month, Cisco agreed to buy wireless technology maker JetCell in a stock deal worth $200m. JetCell has designed an indoor GSM business radio that provides VoIP wireless connectivity using GSM handsets.
