Businesses are grinding to a halt because lazy users are sending emails to colleagues rather than speaking to them. The survey of 500 office workers by Fox's Biscuits found that half regularly sent emails to colleagues sitting less than 10 feet away.

Neil Hepplewhite, Fox's marketing manager, said: "We are increasingly using email out of habit rather than necessity."

Most workers admitted that half the messages they received were unnecessary. Peter Scott, technical advisor at DataAdmin, estimated that personal email content cost companies £1000 per user per year in network equipment and administration.
