Voice recognition is moving towards becoming a mainstream technology, with two of the world's largest software companies adding speech capabilities to their product range.

Oracle is to introduce support for voice-enabled services across its database and application software. Its first initiative allows developers to create speech interfaces for applications built on its 9i application server.

9iAS treats voice as another method of access alongside wireless devices and the web so that users can develop applications supporting all three interfaces, according to Denise Lahey, chief executive of Oracle's mobile products division.

"Earlier approaches to voice technology treated voice as a standalone access method. However, true value is derived from the ability to access the same information from any access point," she said.

Customer relationship management giant Siebel Systems has introduced a voice interface for sales, marketing and service users. Siebel Voice facilitates access to information via 'natural' speech recognition.
