Rupert Murdoch's News International has joined forces with BT to create a UK mass-market consumer Internet service.

Each partner has a 50% share of the venture, which is thought will cost less than #10m.

Called Springboard, the service is scheduled for launch in January and will draw its content from News International publications such as The Times, The Sunday Times, The Sun and News of the World.

The news group said Springboard would be designed to have mass-market appeal to attract the 300,000 people in the UK who use the Internet regularly.

BT will provide the network connection but, officials said last week, the company will also continue to run its own service, BT Internet.

At the core of Springboard are some of News International's own new media companies such as Delphi Internet, its CD-ROM publishing company News Multimedia and its online business-to-business news service News EyeQ.

Pricing for the service will be announced in the coming months, according to a spokesman for BT.
