The ebooking software sits on servers held at the hospitals and interfaces directly with their patient administration systems. GPs access through a standard browser, using the NHSNet secure links, and book appointments instantly, allowing the patient can leave the surgery with a print out of all the necessary details.

Systems have been developed at two levels of complexity. The earlier iteration allows a GP to go online to book a patient into a specific clinic at a specific hospital.

The more complex system, which has started trials in the last few months, offers the doctor a range of possible hospitals and includes information about waiting times to help the patient choose. Once a hospital has been selected, the patient is then offered a range of dates.
