NEC cuts cost of laptop PCs

NEC has followed Toshiba by introducing low-cost notebooks that will allow large firms to cut costs for everyday office tasks. PCs in the NEC Versa M300 range, available now, cost from £749 + VAT and are based on Intel's Mobile Pentium 4-M and Mobile Celeron chips with up to 1GB of memory.

"This package offers exceptional power and performance, with true mobility and convenience for business users," said NEC UK product manager Chuck Wearing.

The entry-level system has a 1.5GHz Mobile Celeron, 128MB of memory and a 14in TFT display. All models feature built-in 10/100Mbit/s LAN capability and can optionally be fitted with an internal wireless LAN adapter.

Higher-end models feature Mobile Pentium 4-M processors at up to 2.2GHz.
