About 1.6 million Alliance & Leicester building society members have opted to receive share certificates in the mutual's forthcoming flotation. This high level of demand has stoked fears that settlement system Crest could come under severe strain in the first few weeks of trading. Only a tiny proportion - 2.5% - will keep shares in the society's special account, which was designed to help reduce the settlement pressures on Crest.
