Ofcom has confirmed plans for the largest radio spectrum auction in its history.
The regulator is to sell off wireless bandwidth in the range of 2010MHz to 2025MHz and 2500MHz to 2690MHz – frequencies that are ideally suited to WiMax and 3G services.
The sale represents is expected to take place this summer. A total of 205Mhz will be made available to interested parties.
"The release of the 2.6GHz radio spectrum will create opportunities for fresh innovation, new services and competition for the benefit of consumers in the UK, " said Philip Rutnam, Ofcom’s partner in charge of spectrum policy.
No doubt this will go the way of the previous auctions and ramp the bids to levels where the operators have to make significant charges to recoup their investments, thus inhibiting the use of WiMax services.
In other parts of the world where the regulators are keen to promote use of services rather than raise money, the licences have been awarded to the lowest bidders and therefore enabling low cost services to be deployed.
