Choose and Book, the NHS appointment booking system has processed more than 10 million bookings, compared with five million this time last year.
The system, run by Atos Healthcare is used by all NHS Acute Trusts and 91 per cent of all GP practices in England, which send more than 105,000 referrals through the system every week.
The system has been well received by patients and is well on the way to becoming the main referral method for the NHS, said Choose and Book's National Medical Director Dr Stephen Miller.
"I am very excited to have reached the 10 millionth electronic booking," he said.
"It is significant because it gives a clear indication that Choose and Book is making good progress in becoming the NHS's everyday method of referral. My patients have responded very positively to Choose and Book and I know that their endorsement has been replicated around the country."
