This ought to be a clarion call for all online retailers that Amazon is not a safe place for your data (Marks & Spencer to spend £100m on in-house web platform).
They are poacher and gamekeeper rolled into one. There should be a law preventing firms with major involvement in online retail from hosting the shopfront of their competitors.
There is a clear and present clash of interest, and abuse will become commonplace.
Can Amazon resist the temptation to analyse other retailers’ sales to benefit their own? That is a huge – and dirty – test of big data ethics in the cloud.
Personally, I think they will fail.
