SAP users look out for each other

31 Oct 2011

It has been interesting to read the comments following my interview with Computing (SAP’s Business One can be too complex for smaller companies). First, I’d like to point out that I really do think Business One is a great product, but unfortunately the story’s headline gives a more negative impression. The simple fact is that all products in this area, when required to support complex business processes, are complex. We’ve understood this since joining the SAP user group and talking to other businesses using the same software.

People are right to point out that for simple and standard business processes Business One is a simple solution.

Our problem, as is probably the case with many other small businesses that don’t have their own IT resource, is that we thought Business One was going to be a “silver bullet”, a magical solution that would help us instantly become more streamlined and competitive.

When we realised that this was an unrealistic expectation, we looked for additional support that would help to extract the value that Business One can undoubtedly deliver.

This is really where the user group came into its own as it was able to offer us the support we needed by connecting us with other small businesses using Business One and introducing us to the SAP ecosystem. As a result, we are now in a much better position to utilise the great value that Business One offers. That’s why my advice to other small businesses is: talk to your peers and get their support through user groups. Use these groups to get better information, additional technical support and network with other Business One users. We certainly have, and the result has been a much better understanding and use of our Business One software.
