Major attractions: Israel offers the intrepid IT professional stunning landscapes, fascinating historical ruins and a high standard of living. You can read a book while floating in the Dead Sea (the lowest place on earth), or watch spectacular sunsets in the mountains and rift valleys of the Negev Desert. Eilat on the Red Sea is famous for diving, while Jerusalem boasts many ruins, churches and historical sites.

Problems: Constant tension between Palestinians and the Jewish government frequently erupts into rioting. Strikes are common. Rents are very high and usually only payable in dollars, so your wage packet will be at the mercy of the shekel/US exchange rate. Most restaurants are kosher, which means you rarely get milk products and meat served together. You will probably have to work Sundays.

Employers: The Israeli software industry is booming thanks to an influx of skilled Russians, US venture capital and various government incentive schemes. Many of the pioneers like Tel Aviv-based Magic Software grew out of the IT department of the Israeli army. Innovative native companies include Finjan, Accent, Vocaltec, Checkpoint and Bimco. Wages are rising fast, fuelled by the recent influx of western IT companies.

Climate: Very hot summers and mild winters. Varies according to the region from balmy Mediterranean to scorching desert heat.
