CERT is encouraging the use of more secure mechanisms for registry transactions. Hackers can access a registry's 'whois' enquiry which lists e-mail addresses where change requests are authorised.

One way to send fake mail is to Telnet to port 25 of a machine you want the mail to appear to originate from, and enter a message. On systems that have RFC 931 implemented, spoofing your "MAIL FROM:" line in this way will not work.
