Just 100 years ago Miami was a swampy village in the south-east corner of the US, with few settlers. Now a fifth of the population of Florida live in the city, which has a booming IT job market.
Advantages Florida is known as the Sunshine State. The warm weather and palm trees have made Miami a celebrity-filled resort area popular with UK tourists, and the newly restored Art Deco district in Miami Beach is a regular backdrop on the fashion pages of glossy magazines. There are numerous beaches, and the famous Everglades are only a few miles away.
Disadvantages Remember Miami Vice? Since the US ghettos first erupted in the Sixtiesm violence ? most recently among Haitians and Puerto Ricans ? has been a regular feature of Miami life. In 1980 it had the highest murder rate in the country, and continues to have a reputation as a dangerous city.
Jobs There are a large number of IT opportunites in Miami. Large systems experts analysts CICS, Cobol, D&B, VAX, Focus, IDMS, Natural, PL/1, AS/400 analysts, JD Edwards, Cobol, RPG, RPG/400, RPGIII/IV, Synon are in short supply. Also being advertised are a large number of Unix jobs (Admin, Analyst, AIX, C/C++, Embedded, HP-UX, Scripts, Sun, Telecom).
