More from the latest issue of Computerworld Antarctica, the cold continent where the climatic conditions make life difficult for IT staff. Luckily everyone can now empathise with these ice warriors. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology, which provides weather forecasts for the polar land mass, has begun to publish its forecasting data on the web in near-realtime.

Key to the system is the 'automated weather station' - a PC linked to dedicated sensors which can operate in temperatures of up to -70 degC. The data is then automatically uploaded via the Inmarsat satellite onto a dedicated meteorological data network and sent to Antarctic bases in the summer, and Australia in the winter. Check out the web site on www.bom.gov.au/weather/tas/.
