The world of football transfer news has always been 99 per cent made-up bilge, but now Fleet Street has been caught out bog-rolling the made-up bilge of an 18-year-old Twitterer.

The Twitterer went by the now-defunct moniker of @footballagent49. In a blog posting, the spoof football agent revealed that he only started it when he was bored one evening, but was quite proud of the way in which Sky Sports, the BBC and even the Daily Mail followed up his bogus stories, gaining 43,000 followers in the process.

A personal highlight, he said, was the Chelsea fan who got “Falcao 20” printed on the back of his football shirt on the basis of one of his Tweets.
