When ‘Cyber nuts’ hit back

07 Jul 2011

It is the year the tabloid press discovered that weird hacker stories are great for hits, but maybe they should be worrying about where the hits come from: for example, the 26 June article in the Daily Star titled “Cyber nuts unmasked”, by crime editor Scott Hesketh, which claimed to unmask several members of “oddball clan” Anonymous.

“The Daily Star today exposes the warped web weirdos linked to ‘cyber terrorist’ Ryan Cleary,” it says, adding that the group includes “a gun-mad teen and a sex-obsessed Tory toff”.

The alleged “cyber nuts” didn’t much like being called names, and threatened all sorts of retribution against Hesketh – which might be why the Star has taken down the article. Luckily, we can still find it, together with outraged comments, here.
