Robin Bourne, University of Portsmouth

The university suffered from communication problems and a project was created to bridge the gap by making news and information more accessible. Bourne developed a mobile system named Thesis The Student Information System which now lets students access a web portal, sign up for RSS feeds and tailor the service to their own educational needs.
Yasmeen Ahmad, University of Dundee
Ahmad was commissioned by Lamond Lab, a gene research facility, to develop a data management system. Scientists and external sources can now collaborate and mine data with ease. Continuous work with the university means the system is constantly evolving.
Suzanne Prior, University of Dundee
Prior created a self-monitoring and management system for patients with diabetes. There was no funding for the project and participants worked as unpaid volunteers. The system is not yet in general use, but has proved popular. Many users have requested to be informed when it is released to the public.
Amarvir Thindal, Sheffield Hallam University
Thindal created a training application for staff working at Laura Ashley. The firm needed to update its training tools for employees working with blinds and curtains. A prototype has been delivered that has met all requirements and helps staff to produce correct orders and quotes for made-to-measure products.
Stephen Boot, Sheffield Hallam University
Boot was charged with the task of developing an embedded set-top box application that will allow digital receivers to handle and process incoming telephone calls. The client, Pace Micro, praised the results for their performance and intuitive ease of use.
Leanda Long, Brunel University
Long’s project involved a study of e-banking and crime, with research looking at how perceptions of crime affect e-business. The survey results helped a number of objectives to be met.
Wesley Hollin
Hollin was commissioned by ZooTech, a DVD development firm, to investigate the storage capabilities and structure of the DVD format. He created an application that reads and displays all the relevant information required by the firm, saving time and costs.
Gavin Topley, Kent IT Clinic
The organisation wanted to develop an easy-to-use, resellable application for the taxi industry, and Topley came up with the Text-A-Car SMS service. The system lets taxi users communicate with their driver using GPS, Bluetooth, GPRS and location services.
