Antarctica may be unusual in outlawing dogs (they were banned in 1994 to protect the seals from distemper) but its technology is reassuringly familiar. The latest edition of Computerworld Antarctica informs us that the Amundson-Scott South Pole Station uses 'a hodgepodge of platforms' including 'Linux, Sun OS, VAX/VMS, Novell (Netware 3.11), DOS, Windows 95 and the IP network'. Fortunately, the confused infrastructure has come under scrutiny as part of a planned $150m redevelopment of the research facility.
