Old and new: The HDS system will allow viewers to access exhibits via the web site

Viglen pairs with HDS to install digital library

The Victoria and Albert museum will now be able to showcase more than 50,000 exhibits online

Written by Sara Yirrell

VAR Viglen has completed an installation of Hitachi Data Systems’ (HDS) technology at the Victoria and Albert (V&A) museum to help the organisation migrate its vast artefact collection onto a digital library.

The museum’s web site attracts more than four million hits a month and the HDS system, which is comprised of two Adaptable

Modular Storage 1000 models, will allow users to view more than 50,000 exhibits.

Bordan Tkachuk, managing director of Viglen, said: “We started working with the V&A about 18 months ago. It has a huge depository of artefacts that it cannot put on show in the conventional way.

“The great thing was that once we had built the physical design, the HDS solution was plug and play, and was installed within seven days.”

Tkachuk added that the VAR now has an offering it can replicate into other markets.

Harvey Smith, UK and Ireland channel manager at HDS, said: “Viglen has taken our solution and built a platform that works well for the V&A. We were there to support Viglen and offer technical advice.”
