Nationwide has completed the virtualisation of 500 servers and expects the project will generate total savings of £8m, as well as operational and energy efficiency.
The building society carried out the project, which entailed the simplification of disaster recovery and enhancement of service continuity, as part of a multi-year datacentre transformation programme.
Unisys has provided consultancy services during the transformation, which is intended to further improve the firm's IT architecture.
Nationwide claims that the project has led to a "significant" increase in the number of production and business-critical applications that are now virtualised.
The financial services firm says it has achieved a 12-1 reduction in the number of physical servers so far, thus saving datacentre space and " significantly" contributing to a reduced environmental impact through a reduction in power and air-conditioning usage.
