Dreamworks to revamp 3D film technology

Partnership with Intel will see hardware and software upgrade to improve film creation

Written by Angelica Mari

Movie studio DreamWorks Animation has formed a strategic technology partnership with Intel to improve filmgoers' experience at cinemas.

The two companies will aim to improve 3D filmmaking technology by using Intel’s visual computing products and tools to produce all Dreamworks' movies in stereoscopic 3D, beginning next year.

To support Dreamworks in the creation of three-dimensional animated films, Intel will provide the company with the latest technology, including future chips with multiple processing cores and optimisation of its applications for the advanced processors. New authoring tools to render higher-quality images more quickly and to modify them with greater ease will also be supplied.

“Our objective is to significantly heighten the moviegoing experience using ground-breaking 3D filmmaking tools,” said DreamWorks' chief executive Jeffrey Katzenberg.

“Technology plays a significant role in enabling our artists to tell great stories and we will create a new and innovative way for moviegoers to experience our films in 3D,” he said

The first movie to display the results will be Monsters vs. Aliens, which is due to be to be released next spring.
