Creese: Technology can lower carbon footprints

Basic steps cut power costs

Hampshire council has saved £1m a year through its green IT policies

Written by Janie Davies

Thin-client computing is saving 792,000kWh a year at Hampshire County Council, enough energy to power 180 homes for a year, claims chief information officer Jos Creese.

The council’s IT-backed green policies are saving nearly £1m a year, cutting travel by 22,000 miles, and reducing energy bills.

And basic measures such as staff turning off PCs at night have helped reduce the electricity bill by more than £100,000 a year.

“Pressure on the environment, growing cost of raw materials and the cost of energy all put pressure on technology to improve its act and contribute to lowering our carbon footprints,” said Creese.
