NHS online health promotion project targets 150,000 with cheap access

Partnership with cheap internet access centres will promote health information web site

Written by Tom Young

Health information site NHS choices will be made available through 300 UK online centres which offer free or heavily subsidised web access.

The UK online centres will be led by a flagship centre in each region to promote NHS choices.

"Those already at a social or financial disadvantage - arguably those in most need of public information or services - are three times more likely to be on the wrong side of the digital divide," Helen Milner, managing director of UK online centres.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the initiative help new users find out more about health, fitness and the NHS services available to them."

The initiative aims to reach 150,000 people over the next 12 months.

Beverley Bryant, programme director of NHS Choices, said: "For its users, NHS Choices will become their personal health manager, containing information on over 700 conditions and treatments, directories of local services and lifestyle tips."

"It will also become their social network for health, connecting people with similar interests, whilst encouraging the exchange of healthcare experiences."
