Local authorities trial secure data tools

Microsoft's CardSpace software will be tested by 10 councils around the UK

Written by Neon Kelly

IT services group Eduserv is working with 10 local authorities on a trial of Microsoft's CardSpace software.

The identity management tools will help to create a secure environment in which council staff can share and access confidential data. The first use of the technology will be to support the Shared Learning Group – a local government forum that meets to discuss best practice.

The large-scale trial is one of the first of its kind, according to Geoff Connell, chief information officer for the London Borough of Newham.

"Recent security breaches have highlighted the need to enhance IT security in government organisations," said Connell.

"Using information cards makes it easier for the group to share information in a secure manner. In addition to extra security, Eduserv’s technology saves us valuable time and administrative resources.”

The local authorities taking part in the trial are the London Borough of Newham; London Borough of Bromley; Derby City Council; the Isle of Man; Kent County Council; London Borough of Lewisham; Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council; Sunderland City Council; Wakefield Metropolitan District Council; and Warwick District Council
