25 teraflop system to help push Welsh university into research elite

Written by Martin Courtney

Cardiff University will install a new supercomputer for use by its Advanced Research Computing division (ARCCA) this month.

The high performance computing (HPC) solution from Bull Information Systems will help foster the adoption of advanced research computing techniques in the University’s schools.

Based on clusters of Bull servers, the HPC system will deliver up to 25 teraflops of processing power - 25 trillion operations per second - provided by 2,048 Intel quad-core processors interconnected via Infiniband technology.

Storage will be provided by a 40TB Lustre file system, and a 60TB shared file system.

Previous researchers at Cardiff University have received Nobel Prizes for their work in chemistry and embryonic stem cell and DNA recombination.
