Oracle to buy BEA

Oracle will acquire all outstanding shares in BEA Systems for $8.5bn (£4.3bn)

Written by Janie Davies

Oracle is to buy middleware software supplier BEA Systems for $8.5bn (£4.3bn).

The deal has been unanimously approved by BEA directors and is expected to close by the middle of year, dependent on the approval of BEA shareholders.

The acquisition will expand Oracle's global presence and boost innovation, said president Charles Phillips.

"The transaction will accelerate the adoption of Java-based middleware technologies and service orientated architecture; advance innovation in enterprise applications infrastructure software; extend our strategic relationships with customers and partners; and increase our penetration in key regions like China," he said.
