RIM revenues double

BlackBerry supplier makes sales of $1.37bn (£673m) in the last quarter

Written by Tom Young

Research In Motion (Rim) saw a 108 per cent rise in revenue to $1.37bn (£673m) from the same quarter last year as sales of flagship BlackBerry products soared.

Approximately 1.45 million BlackBerry subscriber accounts were added in the quarter and over three million devices were shipped in the last three month period.

Diversification into new products has helped the company's results, said Rim co-chief executive Jim Balsillie.

"This growth is fuelled by the depth of the BlackBerry product portfolio and the continued diversification of our business across market segments and geographies," he said.

The sales breakdown for the quarter was approximately 78 per cent for hardware, 15 per cent for service, 4 per cent for software and 3 per cent for other revenues.

Rim has been diversifying into the consumer market after a number of successful years in the business market, and is predicting continuing profit rises in the coming quarter .

Revenue for the third quarter ending December 1, 2007 is expected to be in the range of $1.60-1.67 billion (£786-820 million), with subscriber account additions in the third quarter expected to be approximately 1.65 million.
