Sunderland wins £3m digital prize

Social exclusion project will go ahead with central government funding

Written by Sarah Arnott

Sunderland City Council’s technology plan to combat social exclusion has won the government’s £3m Digital Challenge.

The Department for Communities and Local Government’s competition invited regional groups to outline and submit a vision for a digitally-enabled society to better meet the needs of the local community.

Sunderland’s winning project includes plans for community e-champions to help vulnerable people access internet services and an e-mentoring scheme for children and young people.
