Whitehall creates review group

Treasury-led Major Projects group will work alongside OGC Gateway teams

Written by Sarah Arnott

Plans for a Treasury-led project review group will give more muscle to the Gateway process that evaluates government IT programmes at key stages of their development.

The Major Projects Review Group (MPRG) is being created as part of an overhaul of Whitehall’s central buying agency the Office of Government Commerce (OGC). It will augment the agency’s five-stage traffic light rating scheme, which does not have the power to stop ailing projects.

‘Until now Gateway Reviews could only identify and highlight issues but could not mandate action to deal with them. The MPRG will be able to do that and will work in tandem with the Gateway process,’ said an OGC spokesman.

Overall, the new-look OGC will be smaller and more focused, says the Transformation of Government Procurement report published last week.
