MPs are urging London's commuter rail operators to accept Mayor Ken Livingstone's offer to pay for the installation of Oyster travelcard reading equipment at mainline and suburban stations.
Twenty MPs have so far signed a House of Commons motion urging train operators to act to enable passengers 'to benefit from the full range of Oyster products' and urging Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander to intervene if they refuse.
The motion was put down by Erith and Thamesmead Labour MP John Austin who rates the card 'a spectacular success' enabling 'one of the most efficient mass IT schemes in Europe.'
Train operating companies have been dragging their heels because, while accepting the card would be a benefit to their customers, they want to know what is in it for them, claiming Livingstone's offer is to pay for installation but not ongoing running costs and maintenance.
