C2C has become the first train operator to accept the Mayor of London’s offer to fund the installation of Oyster technology to enable pay-as-you-go ticketing.
Mayor Ken Livingstone this month pledged £20m to fund the installation of Oyster readers at mainline stations in zones one to six to create an integrated system.
C2C already makes Oyster pre-pay available to passengers from Fenchurch Street to Upminster stations within zones one to six. It is now extending it to Dagenham Dock and Rainham, with plans to extend it even further by summer, 2008.
‘We welcome the convenience that Oyster offers our customers and are pleased to be at the forefront of its development on national rail in and beyond the greater London area,’ said C2C managing director Mark Hopwood.
Livingstone welcomed the decision by C2C and says the offer to fund the installation of Oyster equipment is open until 31 January.
‘This is extremely good news and will bring real benefits to the commuters who use these services,’ he said. ‘This represents a unique opportunity for passengers to benefit from the convenience and cheaper travel available through Oyster and a fully integrated ticketing system in London.’
