IT managers feel their work is going unrecognised, according to a survey by the Chartered Management Institute.

A lack of notice to their significance to the business often means their career progress is stalled, the research says.

Some 23 per cent cite the 'old boys network' as the reason for the lack of recognition, with another 37 per cent saying flat management structures work against them.

Only one in five found motivation from the prospect of receiving recognition of their hard work from managers.

The survey also says many managers are proactively trying to alter the situation, with 53 per cent determined to achieve new goals, and 20 per cent talking of using changes to business processes to highlight their significance.

The survey highlights the importance of developing leadership and management skills within IT, says the Chartered Management Institute director of marketing and corporate affairs, Jo Causon.

'The Institute can help giove managers an independent endorsement of their effectiveness and complement their other professional qualifications.'
