Terminal 5 puts new technology on display

Samsung to provide flight information display screens

Written by David Friedlos

Samsung Electronics will be sole provider of high clarity flight information display screens (FIDS) at Heathrow Terminal 5 when it opens in March 2008.

The displays will deliver up-to-the-minute flight schedule information to more than 82,000 passengers a day. Additional screens will offer commercial advertising in the baggage halls or co-located with flight information screens.

BAA chief executive Tony Douglas says Samsung was chosen for the quality of its screens and advanced technical support.

It will also work closely with the airport operator to connect the screens to back-office airport databases for access to up-to-date information.

‘Terminal 5 is a ground breaking project, a showcase of architectural, engineering and construction excellence,’ said Douglas. ‘To emulate these achievements as an operating terminal we set very high standards for prospective partners.

‘The high quality product and technical excellence provided by Samsung will help ensure the new terminal delivers the quality customer experience we require for our passengers when it opens in March 2008.’

Samsung says the deal is globally significant in terms of size and the advanced nature of the display technology which is being included in Terminal 5.

Heathrow Airport currently has four terminals serving 68 million travellers during the year, making it the world’s third largest airport. Terminal 5 will have the most up-to-date and future-proofed technology and serve 30 million travellers.
